OBJECTIVE OF JIG: Be the first player to play all of your cards in a round.

Deal out 13 cards to each player. Be sure to deal in the order that you have chosen. For instance, if turns are to be taken clockwise, then the cards should be dealt clockwise as well.The dealer gets his or her card last. Players are allowed to look at their cards. Nine-card brag is a card game for two to four players that uses a slightly modified version of the hand ranking system in three-card brag, a British card game similar to poker. Players typically wager a token amount of money, but you can also play using a point system.

THE DEAL: The dealer (or one of the players) gives each player a face-down card. They deal clockwise from their left to their right, until they are out of cards.

HOW TO PLAY JIG


Start with the player that is on the dealer’s left. The first player may play any card from their hand, and the card must be played face up. Depending on the card that the first player plays, the next card should be of the same suit, but higher than their card. For instance, if a player were to select the 2 of Hearts, the next card played would be the 3 of Hearts.

The game always flows to the left, following the clockwise pattern.

The first player, who decides the suit of the set of cards being played, should say “Snip” when they play their card. The second player, if they can play a card, should say “Snap” when they play their card. The card has to be of the same suit, and a higher rank, than the previous card played.The third player (or the first player again, if you’re only playing with two people), should say “Snorum” once they’ve played their card. The fourth says “Hicockalorum” when they play their card. The next person announces “Jig!” It’s their job to turn down the sequence of five cards so that the next round can begin.

If a player cannot play a card in the suit set, they must pass their turn.

If a king is played, the next player says “Jig!” because there is not another card in a suit sequence for this game.

Every player must play a card if they have one to play.


HOW TO WIN


This game should, ideally, be played with counters. When a player is out of cards, they should receive counters from each other player, equal to the number of cards that player still has. It’s not meant to be a short game, because it would need to be played multiple times for there to be a clear winner.

However, if players did want a shorter game, they could play without counters and announce the first person out of cards to be the winner.

All players must announce the appropriate word during their turn throughout the game to win. A reminder of these words: “Snip”, “Snap”, “Snorum”, “Hicockalorum”, “Jig!”


HISTORY OF JIG


Jig is a variation of Snip, Snap, Snorum and Stops. The aim was to create a slightly longer and more complex round because the chances of having a specific card in a given suit are lower than having a card that is a different suit but the same rank. The game offers more chances for other rounds and makes it difficult for a clear winner to come out on top in a short amount of time.

There are other variations of Snip Snap Snorum that are like Jig, such as Schnipp-Schnapp-Schnurr-Burr-Basilorum which is played in Germany. In this variation, Kings do not end a round. Players continue by following with the low Ace, then the suit’s 2, then the 3 etc. Until a player cannot continue the lineup.

New players to the world of 3 Card Brag need to familiarise themselves with a few facts and figures, with Three Card Brag hand rankings being the most important of these facts. Along with the various hand rankings we have also added the odds of being dealt the various hands, figures which can make the difference between being a profitable 3 Card Brag player or one of the players who generously donates to the aforementioned profits.

Card

A prial, which is short for ‘Pair Royal’, is the highest ranking hand in the game of 3 Card Brag. A prial is three cards of the same value (eg. A-A-A, K-K-K) with the most valuable prial being 3’s followed by Aces, Kings, Queens and so on. The odds of being dealt a prial of 3’s while playing 3 Card Brag are 1 in 5,525 with the odds of being dealt any other prial being 1 in 460.

A running flush is the second highest ranking hand in the game of 3 Card Brag, only bettered by a prial. A running flush is three cards running in sequence (eg. 4-5-6) which are also in the same suit. The highest value running flush is A-2-3 followed by A-K-Q then K-Q-J and so on. The odds of being dealt a running flush while playing 3 Card Brag are also 1 in 460.

Run

A run is simply three consecutive cards in any suit. The highest value run is A-2-3 followed by A-K-Q then K-Q-J and so on. Note that K-A-2 is not a valid run or running flush. The odds of being dealt a run while playing 3 Card Brag are 1 in 31.

Flush

A flush is three cards of the same suit of any value. If two players hold a flush the highest value card of each flush is used to determine the winner, if the highest cards have the same value then the middle card is used to determine a winner and if both of these cards are of the same value the third card of each flush is used to determine the winner of the hand (eg. K-7-4 of hearts beats K-6-5 of spades). The odds of being dealt a flush while playing 3 Card Brag are 1 in 20.

Pair

A pair is made up of two equally valued cards and another card (eg. A-A-5). The highest ranking pair is Aces followed by Kings, Queens and so on. If two players show the same value pair the highest third card decides the winner (eg. A-A-5 beats K-K-Q, which beats K-K-3). The odds of being dealt a pair while playing 3 Card Brag are 1 in 6.

A high card hand is the lowest hand in Three Card Brag and occurs when your three cards cannot be used to make any of the above combinations. In this instance the highest value card in your hand is used (eg. Q-9-2 would be a “Queen high” hand). If two players hold the same high card the second cards and then the third cards are used to determine the winner of the hand. The odds of being dealt a high card hand while playing 3 Card Brag are 3 to 1 on.
